The Ultimate-NAG52's adaptation can be a bit confusing to understand, so this document clarifies how the system works.
The torque converter adaptation system works to adapt the required pressure to hold the lockup clutch to the desired slip at a specific load and RPM.
These ensure that adapation only occurs when the vehicle is in a steady state (No fast acceleration or dynamic driving)
Gear change adaptation works in the following profiles:
(A)gility and (R)ace mode will not adapt, due to the extra logic for faster gear changes interfering with the inputs the adaptation algorithms use.
Adaptations can be enabled/disabled in TCU Settings
Some adaptation cells/maps will never adapt (See below), but are still included in the configuration app in case you wish to manually adjust things
Prefill cycle adaptations work to determine the offset required on the base prefill time map to fill the clutch packs.
ADP_SETTINGS.min_atf_temp and ADP_SETTINGS.max_atf_temp| Gear change | 1-2 | 2-3 | 3-4 | 4-5 | 4-3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clutch adapted | K1 | K2 | K3 | B1 | B2 |
| Torque limit | 1.5 | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 | 1.0 |
Torque limit is expressed as a multiplier of engine drag torque. For example, an M113K engine with a drag torque value of 45Nm would only be able to adapt B1 during the 4-5 gear change at a maximum of 135Nm input torque.
Input torque is NOT the same as engine torque. Input torque factors in the multiplication of torque in the torque converter
Pressure adaptation is used to compensate for pressure losses in the gearbox, or innacurate solenoid current which can cause an over/under estimation of pressure.
ADP_SETTINGS.min_atf_temp and ADP_SETTINGS.max_atf_temp| Gear change | 1-2 | 2-3 | 3-4 | 4-5 | 4-3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adapted value used for | 1-2 and 2-1 | 2-3 and 3-2 | 3-4 and 4-3 (Load) | 4-5 and 5-4 | 4-3 (Coast only) |
Torque adaptation is used to calculate how much extra or less torque a gear change requires to execute within the desired time frame.
Each gear change gets 2 maps (See the configuration app). One for power changes, and one for coasting changes.
Not all maps are adapted (See below), but exist for completion - If you want to manually adjust torque values for an unadaptable gear change, you can!
| Gear change | Power shift adaptable | Coasting shift adaptable |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Yes | Yes |
| 2-3 | Yes | Yes |
| 3-4 | Yes | Yes |
| 4-5 | Yes | Yes |
| 2-1 | Yes | No |
| 3-2 | Yes | No |
| 4-3 | Yes | No |
| 5-4 | Yes | No |
Coasting downshifts are never auto-adapted, since more factors are at play that the TCU cannot control or accurately measure
ADP_SETTINGS.min_atf_temp and ADP_SETTINGS.max_atf_temp| Gear change type | Torque adaptation target |
|---|---|
| Power upshift | Applying clutch |
| Coasting upshift | Releasing clutch |
| Power downshifts | Releasing clutch |
When adapting for the power upshift, the adapted value is used on the applying clutch (The one taking the new load). So a positive value indicates more pressure has to be applied to the clutch for it to move, and a negative value indicates that less pressure has to be applied to the clutch for it to move.
When adapting for coasting upshifts, or power downshifts, the adapted value is used on the releasing clutch. So a positive value indicates the clutch is being released too quickly, so more pressure is added to control its release, and a negative value indicates the clutch requires less pressure to release (To speed up its release)
